Emma Stebbins Sculpture
I took this picture at the Chicago Institute of Art. This in the Description of this Fantastic Sculpture. Emma Stebbins was a member of the mid 19th century community of women sculptors in Rome, who, like their male colleagues emulated the statues of antiquity, seeing them in the highest form of art. Stebbins carved Machinist and Machinist Apprententice early in her career. In and era dominated by allegorical and religious neoclassical sculptures, these pendant statues portray an uncommon theme: an elder laborer and his young apprentice. Although both men are dressed in the uniform of a mechanic ( leather apron, long pants, work blouse and cap), the apprentice employs the modern tools (stylus and compass) associated with the new profession of machine design, By including realistic costumes and contemporary implements Stebbins depiction of old and new types of labor reinforced the then popular idea that the nation's replubican culture was founded on a strong work ethic.
