College Of Art And Design On Thomas Street

Situated on Thomas Street, the NCAD started as a private drawing school and has become a national institution educating over 1,500 day and evening students as artists, designers and art educators. The College was founded in 1746 as a private drawing school set up by Robert West in George's Lane. This school was taken over by the Dublin Society and later the Royal Dublin Society (RDS).

Throughout the eighteenth century there were three schools: Figure Drawing, Landscape and Ornamental Drawing and Architectural Drawing. In 1811, the school of modeling was added. The Department of Science and Art, London controlled the institution from 1854 - it was renamed the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in 1877. Control was taken by the department of education in 1924, and in 1936 it became the National College of Art.

The college was established as the National College of Art and Design in 1971 by an act of the Oireachtas and is now governed by a board appointed by the Minister for Education.

The College has been a recognized college of the National University of Ireland since 1996. However on 7 December 2010, Tánaiste Mary Coughlan officially launched a new academic alliance between the National College of Art and Design and University College Dublin (UCD). This alliance means, amongst other things, that from September 2011 NCAD will change from being a recognised college of NUI to UCD and NCAD degrees will be validated by UCD.

There have been suggestions that the NCAD move from its Thomas St. location in the Liberties in Dublin city to the University College Dublin campus in Belfield and become a faculty or constituent college of UCD. This met with strong condemnation and demonstrations from students and graduates.

Josh and I recently played a little show for a retiring colleague of mine in the little art gallery in our building. It was kind of cool. :) We really do have waaaaay too many instruments around for a two-person act. The exhibit behind us is a student's graphic design project (rebranding manufacturing).

Nice Garden Art And Design photos

Bird tub
garden art and design
Nearly dusk when I took these images...so I screwed everything I could out of the pixels in editing!
There's a little story here about a contact on the off chance that I might have a second or rejected bird bath design for her fixed budget. I thought no way would it be. Then spent a couple of days wondering how I might do it for the price. I spied an unwanted stool base; laid on some spare cut slate sections from a table innards ...and emailed back the suggestion.
This result I am so pleased with...strong and simple, and I want to make more after this style. Seems we did each other a good turn. It is for the ground but the three stainless steel bolts go right through to underneath leaving a spare half inch protruding for little, discrete feet.

Approx 50 cm dia max: top to bottom of oval. In slate, cement board, concrete, glass nuggets, stained glass, an oyster shell and forged stainless steel bolts

NYC: Museum of Arts & Design

The Museum of Arts & Design (MAD) is a center for the collection, preservation, study, and display of contemporary hand-made objects in a variety of media. Founded as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1956 by philanthropist Aileen Osborn Webb, it was originally housed in a Victorian brownstone at 29 West 53rd Street. In 1986, the museum moved to four floors of a new building at 40 West 53rd Street and was renamed the American Craft Museum. The new space, designed by Roche-Dinkeloo, with an interior created by Fox & Fowle Architects, doubled the space of the original quarters. In 2002 it changed its name again to the Museum of Arts & Design.

In September 2008, MAD moved to a new location at 2 Columbus Circle, designed by Brad Cloepfil and Allied Works Architecture. With more than 54,000 square feet and four floors of galleries, the museum tripled its space.

The design for the new building dramatically opened up the 158-foot tall nearly windowless building to enliven its gallery space with natural light and views of the city. A series of three separate cuts, each one a continuous line fitted with transparent and fritted glass, weaves across the building’s facade to create a light-filled, cantilevered structure. These bands of glass continue inside the building across the floors, ceilings, and walls of each level, to provide a unified sense of space and a visual connection among the galleries.

The building’s façade is clad with custom-made terracotta tiles finished in a pale iridescent glaze that changes with the time of day and point of view. Through the use of glass and ceramic, two materials that figure prominently in the Museum’s collection, the new building design explores and interprets the craft traditions of the institution’s core mission.

The Franklin Institute, 1934
222 N 20th St, Pennsylvania, PA
John T. Windrim

On February 5, 1824, Samuel Vaughn Merrick and William H. Keating founded The Franklin Institute of the State of Pennsylvania for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts. The museum began in 1825 in its original building at 15 South 7th Street (now the site of the Atwater Kent Museum) and moved into its current home on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, near that parkway's intersection with 20th Street, over 100 years later, in 1934. Funds to build the new Institute and Memorial on the Parkway came from the Poor Richard Club, the City Board of Trust, the Benjamin Franklin Memorial, Inc., and The Franklin Institute. John T. Windrim's original design was a completely square building surrounding the Benjamin Franklin Statue, which had yet to be built. Despite the effects of the Great Depression, the Benjamin Franklin Memorial, Inc. raised million between December 1929 and June 1930. Only two of the four wings envisioned by Windrim were built. The Franklin Institute was integrated in 1870, when Philadelphia teacher and activist Octavius Catto was admitted as a member.

Many scientists have demonstrated groundbreaking new technology at The Franklin Institute. From September 2 to October 11, 1884, it hosted the International Electrical Exhibition of 1884, the first great electrical exposition in the United States.[1] Nikola Tesla demonstrated the principle of wireless telegraphy at the institute in 1893. The world's first public demonstration of an all-electronic television system was later given by Philo Taylor Farnsworth on August 25, 1934.
