University of Western Australia just held their UWA 3D Art & Design competition. Allowing the people to choose their favorite artists and giving them awards, UWA encourages artists in Second Life to create digitally what can only be done here.

My very favorite was Nishi Mip's works. Her "Umbrellas" was the People's Choice 1st Place Award, but I also loved her other piece with the robots housed inside a strange orange cubicle of programmed lights. What a remarkable artist she is!

Another favorite was Uby Ifu's "Tristan Areless" avatar. Amazingly real, as real as an avatar can be; the piece made me smile.

With the arts suffering world wide from a lack of government and consumer support due to economic woes, I was glad to see that education and UWA step in to support the artists here.

The Museum of Contemporary Art has quite possibly the coolest designed stairwell I have ever seen. This one was shot looking straight up towards the skylight. Directly beneath me is a shallow pond filled with Carp.

design in the world... (photo 9)

For our first project in my FINA 2135 course titled "Design in Contemporary Art" we had to shoot "...15 photographs of the world around (us), looking for distinct, clear design and composition elements to be used as a source to create abstract compositions using Adobe Illustrator." The aim of the project was to "...sensitize the eye to the world as a source of inspiration for design."

In taking the photographs, we had to consider a number of elements including "...shape, the use of negative space to create shape, repeating patterns, clear colour forms, arrangement and the use of unusual angles, closeups or exaggerated perspectives."

Graphic Design Is Art

Or at least it can be if you put it in a fancy frame and hang it up.

This is a debate that is constantly running, and one we briefly gleaned upon from time to time in grad school. We never really came to any agreements however—some will always say yes, and some always no.

Maybe this will start a few day series …

Poster for the Selby Gallery, Ringling School of Art, designed by April Greiman, Inc., 1999. I made an embarrassing typo and have been misspelling her name. April Greiman has corrected me through michaeljamesspinto and I am very grateful to receive his help, once again from Flickr folks and this time, from the designer of the work being shown.

And michaeljamesspinto, thanks so much to you for forwarding her email. It was fascinating!!!

The Agriculture Experiment Station was the first agriculture building on the Pennsylvania State College campus. Built in 1889, the Ag Experiment Station was founded by President George Atherton as one of America's first centers for agricultural science research. In 1975 the building was renamed the Arts Cottage and today houses studios for art students and faculty. Although altered from the original design several times, it still stands on 'Ag Hill' near Armsby building on the University Park campus. A reminder of Penn State's historic role in agricultural education and research.

Offices of the Anti Advertising Agency and www.delocator.net

Two exhibitions by the artists' collaboratives the Anti-Advertising Agency and Finishing School will take over the San Francisco Art Institute's Walter and McBean Galleries for the month of April and into May.

The Anti-Advertising Agency (AAA) will transform the McBean Project Space into its temporary headquarters replete with a conference table, desks, chairs, dry erase boards, a water cooler, fluorescent lamps, and cubicle walls in order to plan the Agency's counter-advertising projects for 2005–2006. Artist and educator Steve Lambert founded the Anti Advertising Agency. Co-opting the tools and structures used by the advertising and public relations industries, the Agency was established as a response to the pervasiveness of commercial content in public urban space. As the CEO of the Anti Advertising Agency, Lambert will work from start to finish with the artists selected for Agency support to help realize their projects.

To date, five artists’ projects have been selected for Agency support. All of these projects will have workstations in the gallery/office where they can begin work and present their ideas to the public.

Participating artists include Sara Dierck and Michael Dodge, who will work on engaging the public through sound and radio; Amanda Eicher, who will focus on connecting consumer products with labor; Susan R. Greene, who brings expertise in community-based art making and clinical psychology; Packard Jennings, who will hone the Agency's message through public surveys and target audiences; and Dara Greenwald and Josh MacPhee, who will use street teams to promote business activity that doesn't rely on advertising. As each of these artists projects evolve, the residual Post It ® notes, reference material, paper scraps, diagrams, and scrawled notebooks will be left in the gallery as part of the exhibition.

Simultaneously, downstairs in the Walter Gallery, the Southern California based artist group Finishing School will create a café/workshop environment to serve as the physical location for the launch of their newest project, the web-based, www.delocator.net. Finishing School is the collective identity of artists Brian Boyer, Ed Giardina, and xtine. For this project the artists have collaborated with computer programmer Vasna Sdoeung to produce their interactive website www.delocator.net. This online interactive database allows patrons to enter and pull comparative information regarding independently owned café and trans-national coffee emporiums.

During the exhibition, Finishing School will transform the gallery into a traditional coffee house environment with the addition of computers and wireless Internet access. Gallery visitors will learn about the delocator project and are invited to add information to a growing online database of independently owned café’s and coffee houses.

Finishing School is the second Nimoy Artist Residency to be funded by Susan Bay and Leonard Nimoy, who established the Nimoy Foundation in 2003. The mission of the Nimoy Foundation is to recognize, encourage, and support the work of contemporary visual and performing artists.

Exhibitions Director Merry Scully finds the entrepreneurial approach taken by both the AAA and the Finishing School reflective of national and international art making trends. "This kind of artistic practice engages the social and political sphere rather than simply representing or commenting upon it," explains Scully. “It invites a rethinking and exchange from the audience that more didactic work does not."

The Walter and McBean Galleries are open Tuesday–Saturday, 11am–6pm. Both exhibitions invite active participation by the audience. The "CEO" of the AAA will be on-site and available to the public Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The AAA will offer free anti-advertising "consultations" to the public on Wednesdays at 6:30pm, and "focus groups" on Fridays from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. The delocator café/workshop will be open during gallery hours. More information about these projects can be found at www.antiadvertisingagency.com
and www.delocator.net.

MC Art is a cultural association founded by the students of the Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata (whose abbreviation is MC - the letters M and C are evoked by the grey shapes).
The logo looks modern, but it is based on the plan of the ancient greek temples to evoke the concept of art, as the colors of the three circles below are the primary colors in painting.

So there I was busily staring out of the window when I'm rudely disturbed by the ominous bleating of my phone. Happily it turned out to be Tommy (who has helped id-iom out before) but that quickly soured as all I heard him cry was 'Spank the Bishop!' a couple of times before the line went dead. Fearing the worst I gave Tommy a ring back but it turns out he wasn't about to give himself friction burns but did, in fact, have a little job in mind for us. Tommy was looking to launch a new club night called 'Spank the Bishop' and needed a snappy fresh logo to adorn his flyers.

After a bit of tinkering we managed to come up with the logo we have here. Next in our photostream we have it on it's debut flyer (it's kicking off this weekend!)

I hope there are many more to come... Good luck!

Cheers
